Success Stories
From Curious to Confident
When Leo first joined our Monthly Coding Club, he was shy and hesitant to touch the keyboard. Over six months, through our ‘Culture Meets Code’ initiative, he built an interactive digital story about his own family heritage. Today, Leo doesn’t just use technology, he creates with it, and his confidence in school maths has soared.
"I didn't know I could make my own games. Now I want to be a software engineer!"
— Leo, age 10
A Home Away From Home
For Sarah, a single mother new to the area, the Monthly Cultural Club was a lifeline. It provided a space for her children to stay connected to their roots while she found a community of parents who offered advice, friendship, and shared cultural stories.
"TES Community isn't just a club; it's our second family. My kids feel proud of their heritage and excited about their future."
— Sarah, Parent
When Culture Meets Code: A World First in Derby
In June 2025, we launched our groundbreaking Code and Culture Initiative, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund. For the first time, children in Derby spent their Sunday learning HTML coding alongside Yoruba language sessions. Led by inspiring role models like Omolara Oladipupo and our Director Joseph Origbo, children didn’t just learn syntax; they learned they belong in the tech world.
"Seeing my daughter write her first line of code while confidently greeting her elders in Yoruba was a moment of pure pride."
— Parent
HAF Club: More Than Just a Holiday
Summer holidays can be a pressure point for many families. Our Holiday Activities & Food (HAF) programme, supported by Derby City Council and Community Action Derby, ensures that school breaks are a time of growth, not stress. At our Churchside Walk community space, children aged 8–16 engage in sports, creative arts, and STEM workshops while enjoying nutritious meals.
"It's not just about keeping them busy; it's about giving them a safe 'home away from home' where they are fed, heard, and valued."
— Volunteer
Our Core Impact Areas
STEM and Digital Literacy
Breaking down barriers to technology. We ensure children from all backgrounds have the ‘future-ready’ skills needed for the digital world.
Cultural Belonging
We believe a child who knows their roots grows stronger. By celebrating language and music, we build self-esteem and community cohesion.
Health & Wellbeing
Through our HAF (Holiday Activities and Food) program, we tackle holiday hunger by providing healthy meals and active play, ensuring no child is left behind.
